Going Greek

From the first time i came to visit SMU during my Easter break in 2006, all I was told was that going Greek was no big deal. My tour guide said that while he is not Greek, he is stil invited to all of the parties and almost all of his friends were Greek. After experiencing the activities of rush and hearing about pledgeship, i dont see how that is possible.

During any Greek pledgeship, they pledges schedule is crammed full with everything from mixers with other sororities twice a week to fraternity activities almost every day. It seems that if you are not in a fraternity already or pledging to be in one, your social life is alomost non-existant. I only know of two people who are not pledging a fraternity or sorority, and they hate it. There is never anything to do during the week, and only sometimes is there any activities open to everyone during the weekend. If SMU wants to shake their reputation as a "Greek Only" University and the nationally know "pig run" for sororities, then SMU needs to offer more activities and be open to more suggestions about changing the social life.

I can't speak for the social life, but academically, for the men (not for the women) the semester of pledging brings grades down a full letter grade from the fall. If your GPA can afford that, no problem. If you are worried about Cox requirements, maybe there is good reason to worry.
